Winter EV Maintenance Guide: Battery, Range, and Daily Use
Why cold weather reduces range
Low temperatures slow battery chemistry, while cabin and battery heating consume additional energy. Short trips, high speeds, and hard acceleration can make the loss more noticeable.
Charging and parking
Use scheduled charging when possible so charging and battery preconditioning finish shortly before departure. Daily charging does not always need to reach 100%, and a vehicle stored for a long period should be left at a moderate state of charge.
Winter checklist
- Check tire pressure every two weeks.
- Use winter-rated washer fluid and inspect wipers and the cabin filter.
- Preheat while plugged in to reduce battery demand on the road.
- Accelerate smoothly and use regenerative braking appropriately.
